During our class discussion, the professor asked if we would categorize ourselves would we be a Realist, Liberal, or a Constructivist. My answer in the class was that I leaned toward liberalism because I cared about others and I want to make sure that everyone is taken care of. I argued this because I think it is important to taken care of other people in the community. I agree with some liberalists views but I was told by the professor that I leaned more towards constructivists views as well. I agree with this evaluation of my political viewpoints because of how I was raised.
Growing up I watched my parents go from working to a middle-class family, and they did not do this to see their own wealth, they did it to take care of their children. My parents are both immigrants and they still took care of their families back home. My parents wanted their family back home in Haiti to mutually benefit from the hard work they have been doing. They exchange their form of wealth t with others and I want to be able to do that as well. This exchange of wealth that I have grown up seeing is why I have picked up some liberal views.
I have a constructivist view as well because of my personality. I find myself to be an altruistic person and I like to fight for others when certain communities are underrepresented. To me, that means that people need to interact with other groups of people to see a different perspective on how others are living. The government should not be the only institution making sure people’s rights are honored, but we as a community should be keeping each other accountable and make sure we are living in an equitable world.
These views that I have go back to the idea of how I see my parents and how they raised me. I want to work to make sure the generations behind me are taken care of. I also want to work so that other communities are taken care of not just by the government, but by the rest of their community.

  1. I completely agree with your views, I feel as if I have the same ones. My family is mainly working class and I am the first to be going to college because I want to help my family as well as generations to come. I feel like its crucial to think about the future and how we can benefit other people not only just ourselves. How would like this view to come into play with or government though? Like what are issues that you think will be important to help the future generation.

  2. I think what you're touching on is great, and I'd love to see more progressive and liberal ideas at play here in the states. However, I'm not sure how these ideals play directly into IR liberalism, maybe elaborate on that.

  3. Completely agree with the points that you make. Constructivism is something that I would like to see implemented more in foreign policy, especially thinking about future generations. The world took a huge step with Paris Climate Agreement in thinking about the future. Saying that just makes me think how little Trump seems to care about the future.

  4. I really like how your points are personal and seem important to you. I like how you mentioned that government is not the only important factor in making hospitable life, but community is significant as well. I think it is important to not only benefit yourself, but to benefit the others around you and the future generations as well.
